About Our Church

Fells
Church History

The historic Fells Church was founded in 1785 in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.  The church first met in the home of Edward Teal, and later in the homes of the Beazell, Fell, and other families.  In 1792 a log church was built.  Fells Church was part of the Redstone Circuit.  In 1834 a large stone church was built on the dividing ridge between the Monongahela and Youghiogheny rivers.  An educational wing was added in 1950.  The stone church is now the home of Rostraver Township Historical Society.

In 1967 the Fells congregation moved into the current building, a "Lighthouse on the Hill."  The Methodist and Evangelical United Brethren Churches merged in 1969 to form the United Methodist Church and we became Fells United Methodist Church, part of the Western Pennsylvania Conference.  In 1986 the current parsonage was built on church property.

Fells
Church Today

Fells United Methodist Church has been a faithful witness to the presence of God for 234 years.  That simple fact sheds light on the type of people who make up our congregatgion.  The history is robust and beautiful, but we strive to continue to be a church that is still faithfully sharing the love and grace of God with our surrounding community.

We are a church that provides food for the hungry through the Rostraver Food Bank, offers space for education with The Preschool at Fells, gives meeting space for several community groups, ensures a place for civic life, and extends hospitality to a community that has formed with us as a centerpiece.

Life looks different from what it looked like in 1785, but we still call this our place of worship and we still love and serve the same faithful God.

What Methodists Believe

The United Methodist Church is a global denomination that opens hearts, opens minds and opens doors through active engagement with our world. The mission of The United Methodist Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

John Wesley and the early Methodists placed primary emphasis on Christian living, on putting faith and love into action. This emphasis on what Wesley referred to as "practical divinity" has continued to be a hallmark of United Methodism today.

What Fells United Methodist Church Does

Our mission is to provide leadership, connection, and resources to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

Our vision is to ignite and sustain a passionate, spiritual connection with Christ among all people.

When We Meet

Our Traditional Service is at 10:45 Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary.

We gather for Bible Study weekly on Tuesdays at 10:00 am in the Fireplace Room.

What to Expect

Our service style is "traditional" Methodist. We incorporate hymns and readings in our worship.

Most people wear something between casual and "Sunday Best."  We welcome you, just as Jesus would, in whatever you feel like wearing.

Kids and babies are welcomed

(and adored) in our traditional service. No need to worry about noise or running up and down the aisles.  We get it. A quieter space is available in our cry room in the back of the sanctuary.
